I’m a PhD student at Université Paris Nanterre, working at the intersection of art history, cultural studies, and gender studies. My dissertation is about the British lesbian feminist magazine Sappho (1972-81) and thinks about collaborative subcultural publishing ventures as both forums for political consciousness raising and alternative artistic and creative platforms.
My background is in the history of contemporary photography and photobooks. My first master’s thesis looked at the social history of Joan E. Biren’s 1979 photobook Eye to Eye: Portraits of Lesbians on the occasion of its republication in 2019. My second thesis argued for an aesthetic of mess as both a visual style and rhetorical strategy in the contemporary photobook.
Previously, I was the international development assistant at AWARE: Archives of Women Artists, Research & Exhibitions, gave tours of contemporary art exhibitions, taught English at the Université de Strasbourg, and worked as a line cook at French restaurants on both sides of the Atlantic. In my free time, you can find me studying Swedish, watching reality TV with my partner, or playing with our two cats.
